MEDIATOR UNDER THE FIRE

The recent Israel airstrike in Doha targeting Hamas negotiators has dramatically escalated regional tensions.  Qatar has long seen as an important mediator and has been placed in a precarious position. The attack not only killed several people including Qatar security official, but also struck at the credibility and safety of diplomacy itself.

From the Qatar perspective, the strike undermines is role and raises serious questions about sovereignty. Doha's response is calling Israel accountability and warning that the attack killed any hope of freeing hostages reflects a wide regional concern. If a mediator can be targeted in such fashion, who is safe?

The risk here is enormous, The attack jeopardizes negotiations for any ceasefire.it also threatens to draw in other states, erode diplomatic norms, and provoke reprisals. Qatar has rallied regional backing, including an emergency Islamic summit ,emphasizing that many see this  not as an isolated incident but as an affront to the rules that have allowed diplomacy to function in the broader Middle Est.

The world is inching closer to a situation where the norms governing war and diplomacy are under serious threats. What remain to be seen is whether international actors set up, either to contain escalation or allow it to redefine what conflict looks like in the 21st century.
