A City Moving Toward Health and Sustainability
Kigali Car Free Day.
Every first and third Sunday of the month, the streets of Kigali take on a new rhythm. The usual hum of engines fades away, replaced by the sound of footsteps, laughter, and music. It’s Kigali Car Free Day, a special event that brings together thousands of residents for a common purpose: to promote health, fitness, and a greener city.
A Vision for a Healthier City
Launched by the City of Kigali in 2016, Car Free Day is more than just a break from traffic. It’s a national movement that encourages citizens to embrace physical exercise and healthy living while reducing air pollution. On these days, key roads across Kigali including those in Kacyiru, Remera, and the city center are closed to motor vehicles, allowing people to walk, jog, cycle, or skate freely.

Environmental Impact
Kigali Car Free Day aligns perfectly with Rwanda’s vision of becoming one of the greenest and cleanest cities in Africa. By temporarily reducing vehicle use, the city cuts down on emissions and raises awareness about the importance of sustainable urban living. It’s a small step that reflects a much larger commitment to environmental stewardship and climate resilience.
A Growing Movement
Over the years, Car Free Day has inspired similar initiatives in other Rwandan cities like Huye and Musanze. The event continues to grow in popularity, proving that environmental consciousness and community wellness can go hand in hand. For visitors, it’s also an opportunity to see Kigali’s modern beauty and its people’s deep commitment to collective progress.
Moving Forward
Kigali Car Free Day is not just about closing roads; it’s about opening minds. It’s a reminder that progress can come through simple actions: walking together, breathing cleaner air, and building a future where cities thrive in balance with nature.
One of student at Mount Kigali University has told the blogger Samuel that sports have many benefits such as physical fitness, disease prevention, mental and self-esteem. As he concluded this interview, he encourages Rwandan to keep up sporting and have a better life.
